Reporting to the Supervisor of Licensed programs, assume responsibilities for the safe planning and preparation of nutritious meals and snacks for the licensed child care programs in accordance with relevant legislation, ensuring the general health, safety and maintenance of the kitchen area.

Key duties and responsibilities include:

• Plan and prepare nutritious, creative and culturally inclusive meals in accordance with Canada food guide and public health guidelines
• Maintain a clean and food safe working environment and adhere to standards set out by local Public Health agencies
• Order, purchase and monitor food/cleaning supplies, with approval from the Supervisor
• Prepare food in quantities appropriate to the number of children and staff in attendance
• Ensure that children and/or staff who have identified food allergies are not exposed to said food allergens and are provided healthy food alternatives
• Assume responsibility for the setting of lunch tables, serving of meals and the clearing of dishes when appropriate
• Provide assistance to staff for food and cooking experiences they may wish to provide for children as part of their curriculum when requested
• Work as part of the team to support the child care program
• Maintain open communication at all times with the Supervisor
• General items as per all adhere to applicable legislation
• Adherence to the Occupational Health and Safety Act, local policies and practices relating to a healthy workplace
• Demonstrated experience working as a cook in the Food Service Industry; experience in nutritious meal planning and preparation in accordance with Canada’s Food Guide; experience in preparing culturally appropriate meals an asset
• Ability to work effectively and efficiently as a team member in a fast paced environment
• Ability to organize time effectively to perform the duties of the position
• Ability to communicate with others in an effective and tactful manner.
• Self-motivated/ability to work with little supervision
• Familiarity with Canada’s Food Guide
• Understanding of food allergies, restrictions and food substitutions
• Maintenance of good personal hygiene habits
• Knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and worker responsibilities

Qualifications:

The successful candidate will have the ability to work effectively and efficiently as a team in a fast-paced environment, organize time effectively and perform duties of the position, and work with minimal direct supervision. Additional qualifications for this position include:

• Minimum Ontario Secondary School Diploma (Grade 12)
• Current Safe Food Handling Certificate
• Standard First Aid an Asset
• Knowledge and experience meeting requirements for hygienic kitchen maintenance and housekeeping
• Clear Ontario Driver’s License with the ability to drive independently and with regular access to a vehicle
• Physically able to lift, haul and handle large, heavy grocery orders
