About Community Housing & Development

Community Housing and Development is the largest social housing provider in Sault Ste. Marie. The Sault Ste. Marie Housing Corporation owns 700+ rent-geared-to-income properties and 400+ subsidized private sector units which are operated by Community Housing & Development.

In addition to providing safe, affordable housing to hundreds of families residing in the Sault Ste. Marie District, Community Housing & Development also administers local homelessness programs, manages the waitlist for subsidized housing, is responsible for the oversight of other local non-profit and cooperative housing operations in our service area, and distributes funding received under various federal and provincially funded housing initiatives.

How we got started

Community Housing & Development and the Sault Ste. Marie Housing Corporation (SSMHC) was established in 2001 as a result of the download of social housing administration from the Province of Ontario to local government.

How we operate

The District of Sault Ste. Marie Social Services Administration Board (DSSMSAB) is the sole shareholder, as mandated by the Province of Ontario's Housing Services Act.

The DSSMSSAB is also our service manager, under the delegated authority of the provincial Housing Services Act.

Sault Ste. Marie Housing Corporation is run by an 8-member board of directors​​ appointed by the District of Sault Ste. Marie Social Services Administration Board.

The board is made up of:

  • 5 Councillors appointed by the Corporation of the City of Sault Ste. Marie
  • 2 Representatives from the Sault North Planning Board
  • 1 Councilor appointed by the Township of Prince
