About Community Housing & Development

Community Housing & Development and the Sault Ste. Marie Housing Corporation (SSMHC) was established in 2001 as a result of the download of social housing administration from the Province to local government.

Community Housing & Development is the largest provider of social housing in Sault Ste. Marie. Through the Sault Ste. Marie Housing Corporation, it manages 700+ rent-geared-to-income units and 400+ subsidized private sector units across the district.

Beyond providing safe, affordable housing to hundreds of local families, Community Housing & Development also administers local homelessness programs, manages the centralized waitlist for subsidized housing, oversees non-profit and cooperative housing providers in the service area, and distributes federal and provincial housing program funding
