The latest homelessness data for Sault Ste. Marie highlights continued pressure on the local shelter system, particularly for men. During Q2 2026, the 22-bed men’s shelter operated at or over capacity, with 47 people turned away because no bed was available.

The report identified 237 people known to be experiencing homelessness through the By-Name List, including 98 people experiencing chronic homelessness. Indigenous people represented 43% of those on the list and 52% of those experiencing chronic homelessness.

The upcoming Biidaaban Men’s Healing Centre is expected to provide 30 beds of transitional housing and culturally responsive supports for Indigenous men, with the goal of helping residents transition to stable housing.
