Getting Started
Ontario Works (OW) is designed to provide temporary financial assistance and support to individuals and families experiencing financial hardship. Before applying, review the eligibility requirements below to determine if the program may be right for you.
Eligibility Requirements
To qualify for OW, you must meet the following basic eligibility requirements:
- Live within the service delivery areas of Sault Ste. Marie, Prince Township, or Sault North, which includes 31 unincorporated townships north of Sault Ste. Marie up to the Montreal River.
- Need financial assistance immediately to help pay for basic necessities such as food and shelter.
- Be willing to participate in activities designed to help you prepare for and find employment.
Application Requirements
Applicants will need the following information:
- Birth certificate
- Social Insurance Number (SIN)
- Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) card
- Immigration or sponsorship information (if applicable)
- Full address
- Landlord name and address
- Cost of rent or mortgage
- Cost of utilities
- Address history (past 1 year)
- Job history (past 2 years)
- Most recent bank statement
- Sources of income
- Assets
Specialty Circumstances
Some applications require additional support and may be completed directly through our office rather than through the online application process.
- Youth under the age of 18
- Adults providing temporary care for a child who is not their dependent and is in financial need
Emergency Situations
- You are being evicted or are currently homeless
- You are concerned about your personal safety
- You are experiencing domestic or family violence
- Your home has been affected by a fire or flood
- You are experiencing a health crisis
