Housing & Homelessness

Supporting access to safe, affordable housing and homelessness services across the Sault Ste. Marie district.

Supporting Housing Stability Across the District

The Sault Ste. Marie Housing Corporation (SSMHC) was established in 2001 following the provincial download of social housing administration to local service managers. Today, it is the largest provider of Community Housing in Sault Ste. Marie. The District of Sault Ste. Marie Social Services Administration Board (DSSMSSAB or DSSAB) is the sole shareholder of SSMHC and serves as the Service Manager under the Housing Services Act, 2001.

Community Housing in Sault Ste. Marie

DSSMSSAB plays a key role in supporting and managing community housing initiatives across Sault Ste. Marie and the surrounding district.

  • Units owned and operated directly by SSMHC
  • Non-profit and co-operative housing providers

In addition to providing safe, affordable housing, we administer homelessness programs, manage the centralized waitlist for subsidized housing, deliver federal and provincial housing programs, and support non-profit and co-operative housing providers throughout the district.

All community housing and tenancy operations are governed by key legislation, including the Housing Services Act, 2011 (HSA) and the Residential Tenancies Act (RTA).
