Through partnerships with non-profit organizations, co-operatives, and the Sault Ste. Marie Housing Corporation (SSMHC), eligible households pay rent based on their income rather than market rates. This helps ensure residents have stable housing while accessing supports that promote long-term well-being and community connection.

Types of Affordable Housing

Affordable housing options are offered through a variety of housing providers, each working to provide safe, well-maintained, and affordable homes for residents in our community.

Co-operatives (co-ops)

Members live in a co-operative community and participate in maintaining the property.

Non-Profit Housing

Owned by local service clubs, faith groups, cultural organizations, community agencies, or municipal governments.

Sault Ste. Marie Housing Corporation

Properties managed directly by SSMHC and offered at affordable rates.

Vacancies Filled Based on Situations

Affordable housing vacancies may be prioritized based on an applicant’s circumstances to help ensure housing is available to those with the greatest and most immediate need.

Victims of Domestic Violence and/or Human Trafficking

Members live in a co-operative community and participate in maintaining the property.

Urgent Homeless

Households experiencing chronic homelessness. If you do not fall into a priority category, vacancies are filled chronologically.
