Program Will Help More Families Get Affordable Homes in the City

The Sault Ste. Marie Housing Corporation (SSMHC) has expanded eligibility for its Affordable Home Ownership Program (AHOP) to allow more qualifying individuals and families across the DSSAB service area to apply. The change comes in response to rising construction costs and a shrinking pool of eligible buyers within the social housing system, helping ensure completed homes can be sold and reinvested into future housing projects more efficiently.

While eligibility has broadened, priority will continue to be given to individuals and families currently living in social housing. The program combines affordable home ownership opportunities with workforce development by renovating homes through the Building Maintenance and Construction (BMC) program, where participants gain hands-on training while helping create housing opportunities for local families. To date, four renovated homes have been successfully sold through the program.
