The Community Paramedicine program introduced in Sault Ste. Marie in 2022 will become a permanent service following a provincial funding announcement. The program provides preventative health care to older adults living in seniors’ housing, retirement homes, and private residences by bringing trained paramedics directly into the community to provide non-emergency care and support.

Local paramedic leaders say the program has been a tremendous success and will continue to expand in the years ahead. Provincial funding of $89 million will support Community Paramedicine programs across Ontario, including enhanced services in First Nations communities. In Sault Ste. Marie, the program is preparing to launch a mobile clinic van for community outreach while continuing to help seniors remain independent at home and reduce unnecessary emergency department visits.
