A new report from the Northern Ontario Service Deliverers Association (NOSDA) highlights the growing homelessness crisis across Northern Ontario, where homelessness increased by more than 37 per cent between 2024 and 2025. The report estimates that more than 8,100 people are currently experiencing homelessness in the region, with Northern Ontario accounting for a disproportionate share of Ontario’s homeless population.

The report points to increasing poverty, a shortage of affordable housing, and growing pressure on local support systems as key drivers of the crisis. In Sault Ste. Marie, homelessness increased by more than 72 per cent between 2021 and 2024, while community housing waitlists across Northern Ontario have grown significantly. Local leaders and housing advocates continue to call for increased investments in affordable housing and long-term solutions to address the issue.
