A Sault Ste. Marie family has become the latest recipient of a home through the Affordable Home Ownership Program (AHOP), a local initiative that helps create affordable home ownership opportunities while revitalizing neighbourhoods and supporting workforce development. After 14 years in geared-to-income housing, the Taylor family moved into a newly renovated home on Andrew Street, marking a significant milestone in their journey toward home ownership.
AHOP combines affordable housing with skills training by renovating homes through the Building Maintenance and Construction (BMC) program, where Ontario Works participants gain hands-on construction experience. Since its launch, the program has renovated and sold five homes to local families while helping participants develop valuable employment skills. Program leaders say AHOP continues to deliver positive outcomes for families, communities, and the local workforce.
